The St. Malachy Family Faith Sharing Program is a family centered catechetical program that allows parents to respond to the declarations of recent church documents. The Vatican II declaration of Christian education states, “as parents have given life to their children, on them lays the obligation for the Christian education of their family.” The National Conference of Catholic Bishops states, “Parents are the first and foremost catechists of their children.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church proclaims, “The role of parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute.”
As our church documents show us, the formation of faith in children is a privilege and a responsibility of the parents. However, parents need the resources and support of the parish to help.
The Family Faith Sharing Program involves the entire family in the religious formation of its children beginning with preschool. Parents with children in grades 1-6 teach their children at home with the help of a parent’s manual and children’s workbook. One evening a month parents and children join together at the Alys Currier Center. The parents continue their faith journey with the help of speakers who address topics of interest and through group discussions. The children’s session incorporates faith development, singing, discussion, crafts, DVD’s, stories, skits, and prayer to develop the evening’s theme.
The young people in grades 7-9 meet weekly to develop and share faith, life skills, and values.
The Family Faith Sharing Program also includes preparation for First Eucharist, First Reconciliation, and Confirmation.
